Hibiscus Cultivation

I have a hibiscus that I would like to prepare for the winter months. I've heard that they do not survive winters very well. I have lost one prior to planting this one. What do you recommend?

Depending on the size of the hibiscus, and or, if it is a tropical hibiscus you could dig it up, transplant into a pot and over winter inside. If that is not feasible you will need to take steps to provide some protection from the winter temperatures and wind. If you have a hibiscus species which is hardy in our area. If your not sure, contact the nursery from which you purchased it. To help insulate the roots apply a 4" layer of mulch around the base of the shrub. Apply an anti-desiccant product, Wilt-Pruf, to the stems after the leaves fall off this will prevent wind burn. For further protection place stakes around the shrub and wrap it with burlap. Water about once a week during dry periods.
