What type of grass seed should I use for my lawn?
There are many grass seed varieties to chose from, which can become very confusing.
To simplify the process for you, simply ask and answer some questions about your existing lawn and your own personal preferences:
How would you describe your current lawn, or the area where
you want to start your new lawn?
- Sunny
- Shady
- Partial Shade
- High Traffic
- Low or no Traffic
Next (and be honest) how much time and effort do you plan to put into maintaining your lawn?
- Just have an area where I need ground cover and do not plan to mow, fertilize or water frequently.
- Would like a decent looking lawn, but not always able to do the things I need to do to properly maintain it.
- Willing to do whatever it takes to have that "professional" looking lawn, including proper and timely mowing, watering, fertilization and aeration.
Regardless of how you answered all of the above, there is a grass seed to meet your needs.
All of the Agway varieties are blends or mixtures of several different species of grass seeds all of which have particular characteristics suited to certain conditions. A grass seed blend is the best choice for most yards as they will thrive within a broader range of growing conditions and provide the added benefit of improved disease tolerance.
Here is a brief description of four of the primary components used in varying percentages in the Agway Seed Mixtures:
• Kentucky Bluegras – dark green color; medium texture; slower germination; higher maintenance and fertility needed; does well in full sun; well adapted for New England and the Mid-Atlantic area. Not for high traffic or drought areas.
• Perenial Ryegras – bright to dark green color; medium texture; quick germinator; less maintenance required; does well in moderate traffic and shade areas.
• Creping Red and Chewings Fescues – dark green color; fine textured; adapts well under cool and shady conditions. Not for high traffic or sunny areas.
• Tal Fescues – coarser texture (wider blade); lighter green color; requires less maintenance; well suited for high traffic and drought areas.
Your local Agway dealer will be happy to help you make these choices.
