February 2008

As you look out your window in many areas right now all you see is white, but spring is right around the corner so start planning your projects now.

Here are a few things you can do now if conditions allow.

  1. Now is a great time to asses the conditions of the trees in your yard, while the branches are still bare. Heavy ice and snow can easily break off branches so look for any branches that may have been broken during the last storm. These should be taken down so they won't fall and cause damage to your home, cars or people in the yard. You may need a professional to do this job, so make some calls and line one up while they're in their slow season too.
  2. Look for any damaged limbs on bushes, decorative or fruit trees. Trim or shape them at a time when they are free from snow and ice, while you can see the true frame of the tree.
  3. If you can get to it and it has thawed a little, turn over any materials you added to your garden, this will help them breakdown into the nutrients you want to have back in your soil.
  4. Take a minute to look at your house and yard, winter takes its toll and you may find damage or remember a project that fell by the wayside during the busy summer and fall months.
  5. Plan projects and make a list of products and tools you will need to complete them so you have everything on hand when the weather gives you the go ahead.
  6. Visit your local Agway store to see what's new for spring! To find a store near you visit http://www.agway.com/ and click on the store locator.
